It was in the Spring of 2007 that my wife and I sat down at our local Costco.

I had the idea to start a pooper scooper company of my own in January after reading an internet blog about how to start a successful business. [For those who are interested the blog stated that to start a successful business you ought to think of one thing you wouldn't want to do anymore if you had enough money to pay to have it done.] I rested my chin on our back door window looking out at the poop emerging from the thawing snow that I had allowed to collect over Winter from our two big dogs and you can guess what I was thinking.

It was an original idea, I had never heard of another pooper scooper business. However it wasn't long before I found myself on the computer looking for information and with google at my fingertips found that I wasn't the only one or the first who started a pooper scooper business. What did strike me however was the lack of a good directory.

On my napkin I explained to my wife that we could make an internet directory of pooper scoopers that would help people find whether or not there was a scooper business in their area and it would be great. Time is a valuable commodity and it was my intention that visitors to Pooperoni would find what they were looking for quickly. I also didn't want a lot of clutter or advertising. To make Pooperoni a more valuable resource scoopers could add their business without charge, albeit without a link to a website -we have to make money to keep the lights on and offer paid listings for a small monthly charge-, but we have created a real internet resource for our industry. What good is a service directory if you can't find a service in your area? 

My napkin proved a little over-optomistic in terms of revenue, but the directory does earn enough money to pay for  hosting, domain fees, some advertising, and a few trips to Chipotle.

What we are working on now is putting Pooperoni into public view thru various marketing strategies and SEO. We are working on putting the industry into the publics view, a parallel goal and a goal all scoopers benefit from. The idea of hiring a professional pet waste removal service is still in its infancy compared to how common professional lawn care has become.
